Justice in Therapy
Documenting Collective Healing and Liberation
In November 2024, Lavanda Films was commissioned to capture Justice in Therapy — a groundbreaking unconference organised by Black Psychotherapy and hosted at The Advocacy Academy’s Liberation Centre in Brixton, London.
The Justice in Therapy unconference was the first of its kind — an immersive, community-led gathering created by and for Black therapists and therapists of colour, centring radical conversations around decolonising therapy, healing racial trauma, and building justice into mental health systems.
As a London-based freelance videographer, I worked closely with the Black Psychotherapy team to create a documentary-style event film that reflected the day’s deep emotional resonance, collective energy, and visionary approach to reimagining justice in therapeutic practice.
My approach was grounded in observational and responsive filmmaking — capturing not only the structured discussions but also the spontaneous, intimate moments between attendees that embodied the spirit of connection and transformation. From shared reflection circles to emotional discussions about safety, liberation, and collective care, the aim was to visually archive the day’s raw emotion and complexity in a way that honoured the space and the people within it.
A Videography Approach Centred on Care, Representation, and Story
Filming Justice in Therapy required sensitivity and a deep awareness of space. Working within a community-led and emotionally charged environment, I prioritised a non-intrusive, participatory approach — moving with care to capture the energy of the room without interrupting the flow of conversation or the collective experience.
Through thoughtful composition, lighting, and layered sound design, the film evokes the emotional tone of the day — offering viewers a window into the discussions and shared humanity at the heart of the event.
Whether I’m working on community documentaries, cultural events, or social justice campaigns, my goal is always the same: to tell meaningful stories with honesty, artistry, and purpose.
Social Media & Impact Content
Following the event, Lavanda Films also developed short-form social content optimised for Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn — ensuring the message of Justice in Therapy could reach wider audiences. These vertical video clips highlighted key moments, emotional exchanges, and quotes from participants, providing an accessible and engaging way for online communities to connect with the movement.
This social-first video strategy was designed not only to amplify the conference’s impact but also to support Black Psychotherapy’s long-term goals of visibility, education, and connection across the UK’s mental health field.
The final short film served as both a visual archive and a promotional video, supporting Black Psychotherapy’s ongoing mission to uplift marginalised voices in mental health and to document justice-based work across the UK.
Based in London, UK, Lavanda Films specialises in documentary and event videography for organisations, charities, and creatives working in social impact, sustainability, and the arts. From large-scale conferences to intimate workshops, I provide end-to-end video production — from concept and filming to editing and social media delivery — tailored to meet the unique goals of each project.
